Lesley Lopez, Assistant Professor and Program Director at GWU and Deputy Majority Whip in the Maryland House of Delegates, District 39
Lesley Lopez is a university professor and community leader based in Germantown, Maryland. She represents District 39 in the Maryland House of Delegates and serves as Program Director of the Public Relations and Communications master’s program at George Washington University. In her seven years as a lawmaker serving one of the most ethnically diverse districts in America, she has led the passage of two first-in-the nation bills, the ban on ghost guns and the first public grant funds for abortion without tax money. She also was elected by her peers to serve as President of the Women’s Caucus.
With a 20-year background in media and communications, Lesley has worked on the front lines of immigration reform, affordable healthcare, reproductive choice, and the fight for inclusivity and equality. Before her current academic and advocacy roles, Lesley built a dynamic journalism career at outlets such as ABC’s This Week with George Stephanopoulos, the BBC, CNN, and America’s Most Wanted. Motivated by a desire to serve her community, she later transitioned into politics—first as press secretary for Congressman Henry Cuellar, then as communications director for the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee, and the US-China Business Council. A proud member of SEIU 500, Lesley remains deeply committed to empowering others through education, public health advocacy, and social justice work.
